"Distance Over Time" to 14 studyjny album najpopularniejszej prog-metalowej kapeli na świecie - z 15 milionami sprzedanych płyt i rzeszą wiernych fanów na całym świecie. Krążek różni się od ostatnich dokonań formacji.
Johna Petrucciego (gitara) i Johna Myunga (bas), wspieranych przez Jamesa LaBrie (wokal), Jordana Rudessa (klawisze) i Mike'a Mangini (perkusja): po raz pierwszy zespół na czas nagrywania płyty zamieszkał w odludnym studiu w Monticello (stan Nowy Jork) na 4 miesiące.
Efektem jest materiał przypominający pierwsze dokonania Dream Theater - bardziej naturalny, organiczny. To jednak wciąż brzmienie łączące metalową agresję, maestrię techniczną ze stylem progresywnym, z jakiego tak dobrze znany jest zespół.
